Sanctuary Caretaker's Home Engulfed in Flames January 26
Prayers are needed… At midnight, Jan. 26, Ayla’s Acres sanctuary experienced a tragic fire.
Sanctuary caretakers Nedra and Chuck were home. Nedra is safe. Her husband Chuck was taken to Shands Burn Unit in Gainesville. Two dogs, Birdie and Beau are safe. Two birds, Sugar and Guacamole are safe. Sadly, the remaining 12 animals in the house were lost to the fire.
We have an immediate need for foster homes. We have 8 dogs and 4 cats that need housed. We supply everything they need. We will also need homes for 3 donkeys and 4 horses.
The origin and cause of fire is currently under investigation by the Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives. Please keep Chuck, Nedra, and all of these animals in your prayers. For additional updates since the fire, see below, or visit our Facebook or Instagram pages.

Sanctuary Update January 27
We cannot thank our community enough for the outpouring of support we have received during this extremely difficult time.
If you are one of the many people who have filled out a foster application, we have volunteers who are working diligently to review each one and will be reaching out to you soon. We are contacting people based on the priority of animal needs. Please be patient as we work on identifying the best placement for our large and small animals.
Chuck, one of our Sanctuary support staff is in stable condition and receiving tremendous care. His family is with him and keeping us updated on his progress. We greatly appreciate all the prayers and well-wishes you have shared. We ask that you continue to keep Chuck and his family close in thought during this time.
Nedra, one of our Sanctuary support staff, is safe, well, and being cared for. She is doing as well as can be expected given the circumstances. Please keep her in your prayers during this difficult time of transition.
SPECIAL THANK YOUS:
Chris and Hillary, two more of our Sanctuary support staff who have gone above and beyond to help us! They continue to monitor the property and provide care to all the animals that were not directly affected by the fire.
Vernon Keith for making the emergent trip with Fran to the Sanctuary. Vernon sprang into immediate action providing support in more ways than we can count. Your presence and help has been truly valued.
Joan Guglielmo , Lisa Kinnaly, Sharon Kramer, Jen Holloway and Julie Ann Brunsky for keeping things afloat and simply doing whatever needs to be done.
We have so many volunteers, donors, and advocates who have stepped in and stepped up. Your efforts and generosity have not gone unnoticed. Each and every one of you are a treasure! Our needs are great and we continue to rely on your support. We will keep you updated as changes occur. Thank you again for caring and sharing.
Sanctuary Update January 28
We were able to see Chuck today. He is in critical, but stable condition. He is heavily sedated, but appeared to be aware that we were with him. Brat, one of the house cats, was hanging out on the porch yesterday. We were able to catch him, and he is with Nedra resting comfortably. Sugar, our is still in the O2 unit at the hospital. He has started eating and is slowly recovering. Guacamole, the conure, has fully recovered. We would like to thank all of the Madison County First Responders who helped at the sanctuary. You were so very helpful, and diligent. We appreciate all you did. Thank you! Again, thank you to all who are volunteering, fostering, and sending well wishes. We are very grateful for such a compassionate community.
Sanctuary Update January 30
Today we were able to bring four more dogs to St Augustine to foster homes. Mickey, Minnie, Otis, and Happy Gilmore are settling into their temporary homes. The next step is to find furever homes for them.
Thank you Lisa Lesik, Lisa Kinnaly, Sharon Kramer, Jen Buck, and Chris Atchason for helping with these beautiful pups.
Our two birds, Sugar and Guacamole, we're released from the hospital today. The vet bill was approximately $2,800. Your generous donations are helping to pay medical expenses such as these.
A big thank you to Diane Jamieson for transporting the birds, and her generous donation. Thank you Clive and Dawn Jeffrey for lending your bird expertise to us helping these two to get settled in their foster home. Kathy, we thank you for fostering these guys.
Chuck remains in critical but stable condition. Please keep him in your prayers.
